Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that bond to the surface of your tooth to change its size, shape, or color. They are custom-designed to cover imperfections and give your teeth a more uniform appearance.

What are veneers used for?

Many people choose porcelain veneers because they give teeth a traditional “Hollywood” appearance. Veneers are also used to cover:

  • Tooth discoloration
  • Gaps in teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Small teeth
  • Pointed teeth

Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, so you never have to worry about discoloration once they’re placed.

Some patients opt for veneers to align their teeth better, eliminating the need for time-consuming orthodontic treatment.

How are veneers placed?

The veneer process typically takes two visits to Madison Avenue Dentists, PC, starting with a full examination of your teeth, facial structure, and oral health to determine the right shape, shade, and placement of your veneer.

Next, your dentist removes a small amount of enamel from your tooth to make room for the veneer; this prevents the veneer from looking bulky or unnatural once placed. Then, they take highly detailed impressions of your tooth to create the perfect fit for you.

Before you leave your first appointment, your dentist fits your tooth with a temporary veneer. While temporary veneers look and function like your natural teeth, it’s important to avoid chewy or hard foods during this time.

What happens at my second visit?

At your second and final visit about two weeks later, the team removes your temporary veneer and places the permanent restoration. Your dentist may administer a local anesthetic to ease your discomfort and help you relax.

After cleaning, disinfecting, and etching your tooth, the team expertly places the veneer and cements it in place. Your dentist then makes any necessary adjustments to ensure the veneer looks as natural as possible and blends in with your smile.

While the team recommends a follow-up visit, you may only need to return for a routine dental exam and cleaning.

Porcelain veneers are the simplest way to improve your smile in as few as two visits. To learn more about veneers, call Madison Avenue Dentists, PC, or schedule an appointment online.
